Yemeni officials reported that six individuals lost their lives on Tuesday due to an assault by Iran-backed Houthi insurgents on a vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. The casualties included four crew members and two members of the government-affiliated National Resistance Forces. The Yemeni Transportation Ministry confirmed that the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at the Yemeni commercial ship.

This incident marks the first fatalities resulting from Houthi assaults on maritime traffic near Yemen during the recent conflict in the region. Given the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, attention has shifted to the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of Yemen, which serves as an alternative route for Saudi Arabia’s oil shipments.

The Houthis targeted the government-controlled port city of Mokha on the Red Sea and other locations within the country. Yemen’s military disclosed that the rebels attacked Mokha and the province of Marib using missiles and drones but did not provide further specifics. Recent Houthi strikes in Marib and Hadramout claimed the lives of numerous government personnel and civilians, while the assault on Mokha over the weekend resulted in at least seven casualties, including three soldiers.

The escalation of Houthi attacks against Yemeni government forces and oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia has raised concerns about reigniting Yemen’s civil war following a 2022 ceasefire and creating a new conflict front in the Middle East. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the chief negotiator and spokesperson for the Houthis, accused Saudi Arabia of exploiting the ceasefire to intensify the blockade it imposed in 2015. He emphasized the Houthis’ willingness to engage in negotiations but insisted on lifting the blockade as a prerequisite for any settlement.

Amidst these developments, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s demands, emphasizing Iran’s resistance against the U.S. and Israel. Iran’s stance includes requiring the U.S. to end the blockade of Iranian ports, lift sanctions on Iran, and fulfill other conditions before considering reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The closure of this vital waterway has impacted global oil trade and energy prices, with President Donald Trump highlighting the economic pressure on Iran due to the U.S. Navy’s blockade, leading to a broader impact on international markets.

The uncertainty surrounding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the strategic significance of the region continue to pose challenges for shipping companies and global energy markets.
