Artificial intelligence has ventured into the realm of entertainment, now having its dedicated TV channel on the widely-used streaming platform, the Roku Channel.

Roku quietly introduced Fairground AI Creator TV, a channel offering 24/7 fully AI-generated content for free, without an official announcement. The revelation of this addition was first reported by Cord Cutters News and has since sparked online criticism from viewers.

Critics like Frank Landymore of Futurism and Bradly Shankar of MobileSyrup have expressed disapproval of Roku’s move, citing the channel as an unwanted influx of AI content in an already saturated streaming market.

Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, providing free, ad-supported streaming television. While there are approximately 200 FAST channels accessible on the Roku Channel in Canada, Fairground AI is currently not among them, with no confirmation from the company regarding plans for its availability in Canada.

Roku, a leading streaming service globally, was acquired by Fox in a $22 billion US deal in June, granting Fox access to over 100 million households worldwide using the platform.

The launch of the AI channel coincides with a rise in AI-generated content across various industries. Tribeca Festival showcased the first AI-generated movie earlier this year, and Hasbro announced plans to create AI-powered versions of its iconic characters. The dominance of AI over human web traffic is also evident in internet data trends.

Fairground AI anticipates expanding its presence beyond the Roku Channel to five TV and FAST platforms, emphasizing its distinction as the premier FAST channel dedicated exclusively to AI-generated content.

Colin Petrie-Norris, the CEO of Fairground AI, foresees a trajectory similar to YouTube’s evolution for AI content creators, believing that over time, AI-generated content will gain mainstream acceptance and success.

Fenwick McKelvey, an expert in information and communication technology policy at Concordia University, predicts a growing trend towards AI integration in streaming services to enhance user engagement and reduce costs, although the reception of such content remains uncertain.

As the debate on AI-generated content continues, regulatory bodies are grappling with issues surrounding creative control, copyright laws, and privacy protections in the AI industry. Concerns persist about fair compensation for artists and the broader societal implications of prioritizing economic gains over cultural integrity.
