Marc-Antoine Dequoy, a retired football player, has made a comeback to compete for a football championship just six months into his retirement. The 31-year-old safety is currently part of the Canadian men’s team participating in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world flag football championship in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy had announced his retirement from the CFL in February after playing five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes.

Dequoy explained that his decision to retire was primarily due to physical reasons, realizing that his body would not withstand the demands of a full CFL season involving 18 games, off-season training, and camp. However, missing the competitive aspect of the sport, Dequoy was drawn back to football, albeit in the flag football format, after being approached by Canadian head coach Paul LaPolice.

Initially hesitant, Dequoy eventually embraced the challenge of flag football after conducting research and trying out a few games. Despite taking a break to co-host a television show, Dequoy felt a void without football and expressed his eagerness to return to the sport, emphasizing his love for competition.

With a successful CFL career, including two Grey Cup appearances and a win in 2023, Dequoy found flag football to be a refreshing change, despite the differences in gameplay on a smaller field with modified rules. Adapting to the new format, Dequoy acknowledged the challenge of refraining from physical contact and adjusting his instincts to play within the flag football regulations.

Amidst preparations for the world championship, Canada faced a setback when Nigeria withdrew from the competition due to visa issues, resulting in schedule adjustments for the remaining teams. The Canadian team remains focused on securing a top-two finish in Germany to earn an Olympic berth, understanding the significance of the tournament in Olympic qualification.

Dequoy expressed his excitement at the prospect of Olympic qualification through flag football, highlighting the evolution of the sport to potentially reach the pinnacle of athletic achievement at the Olympic Games. As the competition unfolds, the Canadian team aims to excel and secure a spot in the upcoming Olympics, underscoring the heightened importance of the world championship in their athletic journey.
