British Columbia’s forests minister has announced the conclusion of a provincewide state of emergency linked to wildfires, cautioning that the wildfire risk persists. The initial state of emergency was declared on August 8 following the evacuation of numerous Summerland-area residents due to the Bald Range wildfire. Although the state of emergency was prolonged on August 21, Minister Ravi Parmar stated in Summerland that the emergency measures are no longer deemed necessary. Parmar emphasized that while the wildfire season is ongoing and challenging, the current tools are not required.

Encouraging tourists to return to the Okanagan to support local businesses, Parmar urged the community to assist Summerland in its recovery by making local purchases and contributing to the local economy.

In another development, the B.C. Wildfire Service declared the revocation of the offroad vehicle ban imposed in various parts of the province, effective Friday at noon PT. The decision to lift the ban follows an improvement in conditions in certain regions and the forecast of cooler, wetter weather. The Wildfire Service noted that prohibitions on offroad vehicles may be reinstated or lifted as conditions evolve.

Earlier in August, the province had prohibited the recreational use of offroad vehicles on Crown land in the Kamloops Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre, Cariboo, and Coastal fire centres.
