The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in British Columbia have announced the removal of Dwayne McDonald from his position as commanding officer due to undisclosed allegations spanning from 2016 to 2018. John Brewer, formerly in charge of B.C.’s extortion task force, has taken over McDonald’s role as deputy commissioner and commanding officer.
According to a statement from RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, details regarding the allegations have not been disclosed at this time, as they are currently under investigation. Despite the change in leadership, the RCMP assures that there will be no impact on operations or police services in the province.
McDonald, who previously served as the top officer at the Surrey RCMP and as the RCMP’s criminal operations officer for federal and organized crime investigations in B.C., has had his bio removed from the RCMP’s senior executive committee page. With nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, McDonald has held various key roles within the RCMP, including leading the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.
On the other hand, John Brewer, the newly appointed interim commanding officer of B.C.’s RCMP E Division, has received full confidence from Commissioner Duheme. Brewer, a former assistant commissioner with the RCMP, is recognized as a respected member of the RCMP’s senior leadership team.
