Since the United States initiated tariffs on Canada in early 2025, Francine Piché has taken a firm stance against purchasing American goods. Residing in Burlington, Ontario, she prioritizes buying Canadian products first, non-U.S. items second, and avoids American products whenever possible. Piché has made changes such as switching personal care brands, ending her Amazon membership, and forgoing a planned trip to New York to withhold support from the U.S., except when alternatives are unavailable.

Following the implementation of new 50 percent U.S. tariffs after failed trade negotiations, Piché has decided against making any further exceptions. Her family intends to terminate their remaining American streaming service subscriptions, and she plans to give up some gluten-free U.S.-made foods she enjoys, even if substitutes are not readily found.

Expressing her unwavering determination, Piché stated, “That’s the only way that I can fight back.” The resurgence of the Buy Canadian movement has been reignited by renewed trade tensions, prompting consumers like Piché to intensify their shift towards Canadian products.

Amidst this trend, platforms like the Made in Canada Facebook group have experienced a surge in new members seeking information on Canadian-made products. The group’s administrator, Jayne Little, noted a significant increase in engagement and a more thoughtful approach compared to discussions in 2025.

Similarly, apps like O SCANada, which provide details on product origins, have seen a notable uptick in downloads, reflecting the growing interest in supporting Canadian businesses. While some consumers prioritize price over origin, brands like Peace by Chocolate have witnessed increased support from Canadians embracing the Buy Canadian movement.

As the movement gains momentum, businesses like Peace by Chocolate are optimistic about the future, buoyed by heightened consumer awareness and loyalty towards Canadian products. The sentiment of supporting local businesses and the national economy resonates strongly among consumers, reinforcing the shift towards Canadian goods.
