Keir Starmer has recently appointed Christian Turner to take over Peter Mandelson’s role as the UK’s ambassador to the US. Turner, a seasoned diplomat and former Political Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO), will now represent the UK in Washington DC.
Earlier in May, Dr. Turner was designated as the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations. However, a recent announcement from No10 disclosed that he has been reassigned from New York to Washington DC to become Britain’s new liaison with the US government.
This change follows the removal of Lord Mandelson as the Ambassador to Washington due to controversies surrounding his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
Having served as the British High Commissioner to Pakistan from December 2019 to January 2023, Dr. Turner brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He also held positions as an international affairs advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor under Theresa May’s Premiership.
Keir Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Turner’s appointment, highlighting the significance of the UK-US relationship. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper praised Turner’s diplomatic expertise and emphasized the importance of his role in maintaining the special bond between the UK and the US.
