Frankie Dettori has officially retired after achieving another major victory in Brazil, winning the first part of the nation’s Triple Crown. The renowned jockey had initially planned to retire during Champions Day at Ascot in October 2023 but later changed his mind to continue racing in the US.
At 55 years old, Dettori announced in November that he would conclude his career at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar before embarking on a farewell tour in South America, culminating at the Gavea racecourse in Rio de Janeiro. During his final races, he rode to victory on Speak Alpha and Bet You Can in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro, allowing him to showcase his iconic flying dismount celebration one last time.
Reflecting on his last race, Dettori expressed his surprise and gratitude for winning a Group 1 event on his retirement day. He shared, “It’s been brilliant and emotional. I’ve had a wonderful career and feel blessed to walk away unscathed. While my time as a jockey has ended, I remain committed to the racing world.”
Dettori has embraced a new role as a global ambassador for Amo Racing, led by Kia Joorabchian, after his final British Group 1 win with King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes. In a heartfelt message to his fans on social media, he acknowledged the impact of racing on his life, spanning nearly four decades and encompassing unforgettable experiences, relationships, and achievements.
Expressing gratitude to his family, colleagues, and supporters, Dettori credited them for their unwavering backing throughout his career. He thanked fans for their loyal encouragement, emphasizing how their presence and enthusiasm propelled him to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a jockey.
