Tragedy struck at a McDonald’s drive-through in Grand Island, Nebraska, where a customer lost his life in a freak accident while trying to pay for his order. The victim, identified as Michael Dickinsin, 69, was fatally crushed on Tuesday when he got trapped between his vehicle and the building’s exterior. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Dickinsin could not be saved.
According to Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott, the incident was deemed a freak accident. It was reported that the victim was attempting to reach out the window for payment when he became pinned between the car door frame and the drive-through window counter. Investigations revealed that Dickinsin was alone in the vehicle and was the only person who suffered fatal injuries.
During the tragic event, a McDonald’s worker also sustained injuries while trying to assist Dickinsin by entering the car from the passenger side. The Accident Reconstruction Team from the police department is aiding in the investigation. This incident echoes a similar tragedy in Vancouver in 2021, where a man lost his life at a McDonald’s drive-through under comparable circumstances.
Vancouver Police Constable Tania Visintin expressed deep condolences to the family and friends of the victim and highlighted the impact on the witnesses and employees at the scene. She mentioned that victim services were being offered to the staff members affected by the incident.
These incidents stand out due to their unusual nature of involving single-vehicle fatalities at drive-through locations. Visintin noted the rarity of such accidents, emphasizing the unexpected and tragic circumstances surrounding them.
