In a chilling incident, a man suspected of shoplifting was caught on camera trying to shoot a police officer at close range. The incident took place in Canton, Ohio, where Shane Newman, 21, and his alleged partner Katrina Jeffrey, 23, were apprehended for leaving a store without paying for items.
Following their detention at the store’s loss prevention office, officers searched Newman. During the search, one officer questioned Newman about the contents of his pocket, leading to the discovery of a small container believed to contain illegal substances.
As the situation escalated, Newman made a sudden move, attempting to draw a gun from his bag to shoot the officer but failed as the gun did not discharge. Quick intervention from a Walmart security guard prevented a potential tragedy as they disarmed Newman and subdued him with the help of colleagues.
Newman is now facing serious charges, including attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, robbery, and drug possession. Due to his prior criminal record, he also faces charges related to possessing firearms while prohibited.
He is currently held in Stark County jail, while Jeffrey, found with ammunition, is charged with complicity in robbery and unlawful possession of weapons. Canton Police chief John Gabbard emphasized the constant threat of violence against law enforcement officers, acknowledging the role of community support in ensuring their safety.
