One post pointed out a video showing Chen in China enjoying ice cream on March 25th, the same day he allegedly voted electronically in the House of Commons. Concerns were raised about potential national security risks if Chen had indeed voted from China. Conservative MP John Barlow echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for answers regarding Chen’s actions.
House of Commons regulations prohibit MPs from participating in votes while outside Canada. The rules specify that electronic voting can only occur within the country’s borders. Additionally, MPs’ identities are visually confirmed through facial recognition technology when casting their votes.
Chen’s office clarified that he had been in China from March 14 to March 22 but returned to Canada for parliamentary duties on March 23. Supporting evidence included Chen’s boarding pass and visa stamps in his passport, verifying his travel dates. The office emphasized that Chen did not vote from outside Canada and attributed his resignation to health issues following a vehicle accident last fall.
Critics questioned Chen’s ability to travel to China given his health concerns preventing frequent trips to Ottawa. The trip to China was organized by the Hakka Canadian Association for parliamentary business purposes. Chen’s office shared communications with House of Commons IT staff regarding cybersecurity protocols during his trip.
The Office of Canada’s Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner disclosed details of Chen’s trip, which was supported by the Hakka Canadian Association. The trip itinerary included hotel stays from March 14 to 22. Chen’s resignation is scheduled for the upcoming month due to his health challenges.
