University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, although not a Nobel Prize winner, has earned an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honor the most unconventional and innovative research in academia.
Thurairajah and his team were awarded this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing. When his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the news of their victory, Thurairajah expressed his elation at the achievement.
The team developed various urinal prototypes, such as the slim Nautilus and the angular Cornocopia, to find the most effective design. Thurairajah explained that the Nautilus design was superior due to its reduced splash and easier cleaning process compared to the Cornucopia.
At the award ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues donned bright yellow raincoats, prepared to receive praise from their fellow quirky scientists. Despite the nature of their research, Thurairajah clarified that they did not use real urine for testing purposes.
While acknowledging the humor in their work, Thurairajah emphasized the practical significance of their urinal research in enhancing public restroom facilities. The study findings were published in the journal PNAS Nexus last year.
Apart from the Waterloo physicists, other Canadian researchers were also recognized at the ceremony. A team from the University of Toronto received the Economics Prize for their research on unethical behavior among upper-class individuals. Additionally, McGill University scientists were part of the team that won the Technology Prize for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Awards, presented by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa-related concerns. Thurairajah, alongside collaborators from various countries, supports the international nature of scientific collaboration and expresses solidarity with fellow researchers worldwide.
