Nigel Farage faces scrutiny over links to cryptocurrency within Reform UK amid allegations of potential misuse of his authority as a Member of Parliament.
Calls for an investigation by the Electoral Commission arose following the disclosure of a monumental £9 million donation from crypto investor Christopher Harborne to the party, marking the largest single donation ever received.
Concerns were raised by the Liberal Democrats regarding a possible conflict of interest after Farage mentioned the cryptocurrency Tether in a radio interview, with reports indicating that Harborne holds a significant stake in the company behind Tether.
The Liberal Democrats have urged the Electoral Commission to examine the potential conflict of interest involving Farage and Tether, particularly in light of the substantial donation recently received by Reform from Harborne.
Lisa Smart, a spokesperson for the Lib Dems, emphasized the importance of upholding public trust in the political system, highlighting the risks associated with any perceived connections between political advocacy and major corporate contributions.
Smart also raised questions regarding the acceptance of cryptocurrency donations by Farage and Reform, expressing concerns over the transparency of funding sources.
Anna Turley, chair of the Labour Party, called for Farage to address pertinent inquiries, emphasizing the need for clarity on undisclosed crypto donations and urging full disclosure to reassure the public of the absence of any impropriety.
In response to these developments, the Electoral Commission clarified that Reform had not reported any cryptocurrency donations, stating that such contributions would be categorized as ‘non-monetary’ donations and should be detailed in the political finance database for transparency.
Farage defended the donation from Harborne, asserting that there were no expectations of reciprocity and highlighting Harborne’s history of supporting Brexit-related initiatives.
Reform UK has been approached for comment on these matters.
