Sainsbury’s has discontinued its Chop Chop rapid delivery app, opting to merge the service into its primary app instead. Chop Chop, launched in 2016 to provide quick grocery deliveries within 60 minutes, was operational in 50 Sainsbury’s stores. Users may have observed that the standalone Chop Chop app has been phased out, redirecting download attempts to the main Sainsbury’s app.

According to Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, the decision to decommission the app aims to simplify the shopping experience for customers. In a post on LinkedIn, Banks announced, “Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop! We’ve officially decommissioned the standalone Chop Chop app and brought it into the Sainsbury’s shopping app. Why? Well, because customers shouldn’t have to think about which app to use.”

He praised the collaborative efforts of various teams in Experience Design, product, and engineering for making this transition seamless. The integration is a significant move towards streamlining the ecosystem, enhancing the shopping process to feel more straightforward, peaceful, and personalized.

Chop Chop had been a direct competitor to Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, known for delivering food in as little as 20 minutes. In other news from UK supermarkets, Co-op has disclosed plans to open 18 new or revamped stores in the initial quarter of 2026. The first store of the year will be launched in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire.

Additionally, some Co-op stores are set to reopen after renovations, including locations in Eastern Green, Coventry, and Ealing, London. Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, emphasized the brand’s commitment to creating community-centric stores that cater to local needs and contribute to neighborhood life.

McCrae stated, “Our stores focus on quality products, offer value to our members and customers, and feature a variety of promotions and deals on sought-after items.” She expressed delight in the opening of the first store in 2026 and highlighted Co-op’s expansion plans to establish a stronger presence in UK high streets and communities.

Moreover, Co-op has announced a significant investment of £70 million through its Levy Share program to generate 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030, contributing to job creation and skill development in the coming years.
