An inappropriate relationship between a prison tutor and an inmate at HMP Chelmsford was exposed when letters exchanged between them were found, along with a photo of the prisoner in the tutor’s home bedroom.

The tutor, Melissa Murphy, 48 years old, had been working at the prison for four years and first encountered the inmate in the summer of 2023. The initial letter from the prisoner to Murphy was received in November of the same year.

Instead of reporting the communication, Murphy engaged in correspondence with the inmate, leading to the discovery of their relationship through a cache of letters. Suspicion arose when another staff member attempted to enter a locked classroom where Murphy and the prisoner were alone, with the keys missing.

Subsequently, Murphy was arrested after it was revealed that her keys, required to prevent prisoner access and potential escapes, were detached from her. Further investigation at her residence unveiled more letters and the photo of the inmate in her bedroom.

Melissa Murphy, residing in Chelmsford, was arrested on December 11, 2023, and terminated from her teaching position at HMP Chelmsford. Charged on February 12, 2025, she pleaded guilty to one count of misconduct in a public office at Chelmsford Crown Court on November 28.

Detective Constable Becky Sparrow of Essex Police emphasized the breach of trust by Murphy in forming this inappropriate relationship, putting both the inmate and herself at risk. She stressed the importance of maintaining integrity within the criminal justice system to ensure the safety of prisoners and the public.

Collaborating closely with HMP Chelmsford, the police department ensured a robust case against Murphy, prompting her guilty plea. The severity of the sentence is now awaited from the courts.
