At least 16 individuals lost their lives and approximately 20 others sustained injuries following a tragic incident where a school bus careened down a 250ft embankment.
The group of teenagers had just finished a school graduation celebration trip and took a poignant group photo before boarding the bus back to Bello, near Medellin in Colombia.
The fatal accident happened early in the morning as the students were returning home from their trip. The bus overturned close to Remedios in Antioquia department, South America. Distressing images from the scene depicted the injured and deceased youngsters amidst the wreckage.
Before the confirmed death toll reached 16, Governor Andres Julian Rendon of Antioquia expressed his sorrow over the accident involving students from Liceo Antioqueno school in Bello. The governor confirmed multiple casualties and activated emergency response measures across the hospital network.
A video statement from outside the hospital revealed that the students had been celebrating their graduation. The injured individuals, mostly aged between 16 and 18, were listed for ongoing support.
The bus driver, Johnatan Taborda Cocacolo, was among the fatalities. An investigation into the cause of the tragedy was initiated as the community mourned the loss.
Senior Prom Fest, the party and entertainment provider responsible for transporting the victims, extended condolences to the affected families and pledged full cooperation with authorities. The company emphasized its commitment to assisting the impacted individuals and their loved ones.
Local authorities, including Colombian councillor John Concejal, expressed solidarity with the victims and their families after the devastating accident. The school of the students involved extended its support to the affected families during this time of grief.
