A recent agreement signed between the United Kingdom and Greece is being praised as a significant step forward in combating human trafficking. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper finalized the pact in Athens, emphasizing its role in disrupting smuggling operations by providing training to Greek authorities on intercepting small boats used for perilous Channel crossings.

In addition to the collaboration with Greece, the UK government is intensifying efforts in North Africa to deter risky journeys into Europe. Cooper unveiled fresh funding for initiatives in Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia with the aim of redirecting potential migrants towards local employment opportunities.

Addressing the issue, Cooper stated, “Illegal and hazardous boat crossings pose a threat to border security in both the Channel and the Mediterranean. The UK and Greece share a common priority in combatting illegal migration and dismantling criminal smuggling networks worth millions. This coordinated approach reflects our commitment to tackling organized immigration crime on a global scale.”

The Foreign Secretary highlighted the Foreign Office’s expanded engagement with international partners to address smuggling activities along the routes into Europe, emphasizing a comprehensive strategy to combat the issue.

Recent joint efforts between Greek authorities and the National Crime Agency have led to successful operations against a migrant smuggling and document forgery network based in Athens. The collaboration resulted in eight arrests, the shutdown of a travel agency linked to the network’s leader, and the discovery and seizure of counterfeit documents, passport materials, biometric data, and forgery tools.

A funding allocation of £1.5 million will bolster development projects in North Africa under the North Africa Migration and Development (NAMAD) initiative. The program has already provided training and essential services to over 17,000 individuals, supporting their integration and well-being.
