Vodafone has introduced a novel method to access the internet. Instead of utilizing traditional copper or fiber optic cables, the company’s latest Wi-Fi router operates by downloading files and streaming content over a 5G mobile signal.

This innovative approach caters to households that currently lack access to faster fiber optic connections or for individuals seeking more flexibility. The device can be conveniently relocated, making it particularly well-suited for renters or students who frequently change residences.

One of the main advantages of this new system is its simple installation process. Powered by Vodafone’s network, users can easily set it up themselves without the need for a technician to visit or perform any wall drilling. All that’s required is to plug it into a power source, turn it on, and instantly connect to the internet.

It’s important to note that this new system offers speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is sufficient for activities like streaming movies on Netflix, sending emails, and working from home. However, it falls short compared to full fiber connections that can provide speeds exceeding 900Mbps.

For perspective, downloading a full HD movie using this 5G router would take approximately 8 minutes, whereas a fiber gigabit connection would accomplish the same task in just 40 seconds.

To assist consumers in making informed decisions, Vodafone is launching an integrated availability checker on their website. This tool is designed to help users determine whether full fiber or 5G Broadband would offer the fastest speeds in their specific area.

This isn’t Vodafone’s first foray into providing internet access via 5G. The previous GigaCube device has been discontinued and replaced by this new router.

In a statement regarding the launch, Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, mentioned, “Millions of households are still paying over the odds for unreliable and slow broadband that often only reaches 74Mbps. With Vodafone 5G Broadband, we’re giving those homes a genuinely fast alternative, at great value, with no installation, no waiting and no hassle.”

He added, “As the UK’s largest full fiber provider, we already bring fast, reliable broadband to more homes than anyone else – and by adding 5G Broadband, we can now reach millions more. This launch is about giving customers real choice: full fiber where it’s available, and powerful 5G Broadband where it’s not – plus, better options for anyone wanting speed with ease and flexibility.”

Additionally, Three, now part of Vodafone, also offers a similar service. Vodafone’s pricing starts from £21 per month, while Three’s home broadband is currently priced at £11 for the first nine months.
