Nicky Henderson has put an end to the speculation surrounding Constitution Hill’s participation at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival. There have been differing opinions on the future path for this highly talented hurdler.

Previously undefeated over hurdles, Constitution Hill faced a setback during the 2025 Champion Hurdle, leading to a series of disappointing performances with falls in three of the last four hurdles. Henderson, in contemplation, ran Constitution Hill on the Flat for the first time at Southwell in a specially arranged 1m4f race on the all-weather track.

In a remarkable display witnessed by over 3,000 spectators on ITV’s Friday Night Live show, Constitution Hill triumphed by a significant margin, showcasing potential as a strong Flat racer. Henderson acknowledged the dilemma he faced post the Southwell win, acknowledging the tough decision ahead with a 50-50 chance of participation at Cheltenham.

Following a scheduled training session in Lambourn, it became evident that Constitution Hill’s odds for the Champion Hurdle were diminishing rapidly, leading to his displacement as the favorite and eventually a decision not to compete at Cheltenham. This move likely signifies the end of his jumping career, shifting the focus to Flat racing.

Henderson and owner Michael Buckley deliberated extensively before reaching this conclusion, emphasizing the horse’s new prospects in a different discipline. Henderson expressed gratitude towards Constitution Hill’s supporters and the challenging yet rewarding journey they’ve been on. Cheltenham has extended an invitation for Constitution Hill to parade on Champion Hurdle day, allowing his National Hunt fans to bid farewell.

Constitution Hill had a remarkable streak of ten consecutive hurdle victories, including wins at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2022 and the Champion Hurdle in 2023. Despite unfortunate setbacks in recent years, his legacy in jumping remains significant.
