A donor affiliated with the Labour Party has taken preemptive action against potential government measures to restrict children’s access to social media. Dale Vince, a vocal figure, criticized tech giants for what he described as unrestricted influence over young individuals, specifically targeting billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
Responding to what he identified as a key concern for parents, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a mobile phone plan that permits children unlimited calls and texts but prohibits internet access. Mr. Vince, a millionaire, argued that this traditional plan is necessary due to the harmful content children are exposed to and called on government officials to take action.
This move comes amidst growing pressure on the government to implement a ban on social media access for individuals under the age of 16. Recent developments saw over 60 Labour Members of Parliament urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead, which implemented a similar ban in December. Several other nations are reportedly contemplating comparable legislation, with Sir Keir expressing openness to the idea.
Among Mr. Vince’s various business ventures is Ecotalk, which operates on EE’s mobile network and allocates profits towards land restoration and rewilding initiatives. The company has recently launched a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting at £4 per month. Unlike many competing options, this plan excludes internet access.
Mr. Vince emphasized the importance of the Just Talk tariff in limiting tech moguls’ influence on young individuals and meeting the demands of customers, particularly parents, for a communication tool that does not entail online engagement. He highlighted the initiative as a proactive step to safeguard children from negative online exposure and underscored the need for responsible tech practices.
Established by Mr. Vince in 2018, Ecotalk collaborates with ecologist and Springwatch presenter Chris Packham to support conservation efforts in Sussex and Devon.
