Keir Starmer faced a setback as a leftist candidate, Andrea Egan, emerged victorious in the election to lead one of Labour’s major union supporters, Unison. Egan secured nearly 60% of the vote, defeating incumbent Christina McAnea, a close ally of Starmer who had maintained strong ties between the union and the Labour Party.
This outcome presents a challenge for Labour as Egan, who was expelled from the party in 2022, campaigned on a platform to reassess Unison’s relationship with Labour, potentially impacting the balance within Labour’s National Executive Committee. Unison, with approximately 1.3 million members predominantly from the NHS and public sector, holds significant influence as one of Labour’s primary backers.
Egan’s election pledge includes conducting a thorough review of the union’s ties with Labour to ensure alignment with democratically agreed-upon policies. Her appointment signals a shift towards member-driven decision-making within Unison. Egan’s commitment to advocating for public sector workers’ rights and challenging issues like underfunding and low pay resonated with voters.
In a statement following her election, Egan emphasized empowering union members to drive change and confront challenges faced by public sector workers. Notably, she expressed a dedication to representing members’ interests and standing firm against any entity that opposes their welfare.
As a social worker from Bolton, Egan declared she would forgo the General Secretary’s salary, opting to receive a social worker’s wage instead. Despite being expelled from Labour for sharing content from a banned Marxist group, Egan’s alignment with Jeremy Corbyn’s left-wing movement, “Your Party,” underscores her ideological stance.
Starmer extended his congratulations to Egan on her new role, expressing readiness to collaborate with her. He also commended McAnea for her contributions to the Labour and trade union movement, highlighting her achievements in advancing workers’ rights and securing fair pay agreements.
Hollie Ridley, General Secretary of the Labour Party, praised McAnea for her dedication to workers’ rights and values. Ridley acknowledged McAnea’s pivotal role in driving legislative changes benefiting workers and fostering a fairer society. Additionally, Ridley conveyed best wishes to both McAnea and Egan, emphasizing ongoing collaboration towards realizing a more equitable future under the Labour Government.
