Great talent comes with great responsibility, not only to oneself but also to future generations of athletes. However, Lindsey Vonn disregarded these responsibilities in a selfish and reckless manner.

Just nine days after injuring the ligaments in her left knee, the American skier decided to participate in the women’s downhill event at the Winter Olympics in Cortina. The outcome was witnessing the double world champion endure a horrific crash on the slopes.

Vonn had to be airlifted to Ca Foncello hospital in Treviso, approximately 130km away from Olimpia delle Tofane in the Dolomites, for extensive treatment. The hospital confirmed that she underwent orthopedic surgery to stabilize the fracture in her left leg, the same leg with the previously torn ACL.

Some speculate that Vonn’s mistake was hitting a gate with her ski pole, throwing off her balance. Yet, the real error was her decision to compete despite her condition.

At 41 years old, Vonn should have known better.

The crash was a distressing sight, not just for viewers but also for her teammates, Breezy Johnson and Isabelle Wright. Johnson witnessed the incident on a screen, while Wright was waiting to start her own run from above Vonn.

Participating in such a risky sport with a significant injury sets a poor example. Downhill skiing is inherently perilous, and attempting it with a compromised leg only exacerbates the dangers.

Questions arise about who permitted Vonn to compete. What role did her coach, Aksel Lund, and the medical team play in allowing her to take such a risk?

An internal inquiry within the USA Olympic team is necessary to determine the authorization for Vonn’s participation.

Prior to the event, Vonn had expressed her determination to compete regardless of the outcome.

The aftermath resulted in another severe injury, disrupting a prominent event, and potentially influencing young athletes to prioritize ambitions over safety.

Knowing it could be her final chance for a gold medal, Vonn was relentless in her pursuit, disregarding the consequences. However, instead of sympathy, she deserves criticism.

While some may praise her, waking up in a hospital bed post-surgery likely did not feel heroic to Vonn.

Ultimately, she bears sole responsibility for her actions.
