A significant change in the UK’s telecommunications landscape is on the horizon, urging homeowners to take action before a looming deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long kept people connected are being phased out in favor of a new technology called Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.
This transition not only aligns with modern communication needs but also promises enhanced reliability and introduces new features like clearer call quality, call forwarding to mobile phones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
Scheduled for implementation in January 2027, this overhaul has prompted BT to launch a campaign fronted by Clare Balding to raise awareness among households. The campaign, dubbed ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ encourages homeowners to inspect their landline setups and ensure readiness for the digital era.
Recent research reveals a tendency among Brits to procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that functional systems do not warrant immediate attention. Clare Balding emphasized the critical need for homeowners to heed notifications from service providers to prevent disruptions to vital services.
Assurances have been given that customers are likely to retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable without any increase in bills during the transition. Most households will simply need to connect their existing phones to their broadband hubs instead of traditional wall sockets, typically without the need for engineer visits.
While exceptions may arise, contacting the service provider should resolve any connectivity issues. Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the importance of acting promptly upon receiving communications from service providers to ensure a smooth transition to digital landlines for improved reliability and security.
BT recommends that customers with special needs, such as telecare device users, inform their providers promptly to receive appropriate support during the transition. Digital Voice, BT’s novel home phone service, leverages broadband technology to replace copper connections, offering modern features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones for enhanced communication experiences.
The superior call quality of Digital Voice is set to eliminate the inconvenience of crackling conversations, requiring compatible Digital Home phones to leverage the service fully. Upgrading to Digital Voice for most households will not disrupt their phone usage, as the cost is included in a consolidated package price with no additional charges.
