The upcoming World Snooker Championship at The Crucible in Sheffield faces uncertainty as the current hosting contract nears its end. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to provide financial support to help secure the tournament’s future at the iconic venue.

Despite suggestions by Barry Hearn, president of Matchroom Sport, about exploring alternative venues, local council leaders express a strong desire to retain the championship at The Crucible. The government’s intervention, coupled with Starmer’s recent visit to discuss the event’s prospects with stakeholders, underscores the importance of retaining the prestigious tournament in Sheffield.

A source close to the negotiations mentioned that discussions are progressing positively following the Prime Minister’s involvement, indicating a promising outlook for the event’s continuation in the city. The Crucible has been the esteemed home of the Snooker World Championships since 1977, but doubts have arisen due to the contractual situation.

Hearn has issued a warning that if his demand for £1 million in prize money is not met, Saudi Arabia could potentially host the tournament in the future. Emphasizing the significance of government support, Hearn stressed the need for Sheffield to align with their expectations to ensure the event’s longevity in the UK.

The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to run from April 18 to May 4, with Zhao Xintong, the reigning champion, set to defend his title after defeating Mark Williams in last year’s final. The event holds great significance for the city and the sport, with hopes pinned on securing its future in Sheffield.

As preparations for the championship progress, fans can anticipate an exciting event that showcases top-notch snooker talent and a celebration of the sport’s heritage.
